Susan G Komen Community Truck

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, formerly known as The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, has been working diligently to eradicate breast cancer for more than two decades. In 2007, the 25th anniversary of the organization, along with the name change, a new logo was created as well as a revitalized mission "to end breast cancer forever".

Since its inception in 1982, Komen has been dedicated to increasing research, promoting education and making health services available to those who may be unable to obtain medical treatment. Through public awareness, volunteers, corporate sponsorship, and donations from everyday people, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has become one the largest breast cancer charities in the United States.

American Concrete has always been a believer in giving back to the community, and participates annually in “Passionately Pink for the Cure” — a fundraising and education program in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  In exchange for an extra “jeans” day, each employee contributes $5 and OMG Midwest, Inc. matches the contributions.

This year, one of our employees was motivated to get the word out and raise public awareness after learning that her mother would be going through treatment for the third time to combat breast cancer.  Shawna Barnett, who works for “American Concrete Products” (Customer Service Dept), had seen a truck with the new “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” logo painted on it.  She knew that her co-workers at American Concrete Products would want to get involved and that this would be a great way to help spread the word.  She contacted Diane Ferris, a volunteer at the “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” Des Moines affiliate.  She then went to Chris West, Vice-President/General Manager: American Concrete Products, with her idea.  After a couple of months of working out the details, American Concrete Products is now the proud owner of a pink “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” concrete mixer truck. Just like Shawna, Tom Nunez, a driver for American Concrete, also had a loved one battle breast cancer.  Tom’s wife, Sandra, made a full recovery and Tom was more than happy to be chosen to drive the Susan G. truck for American. We all hope that when people see our truck driving down the road, it will be a reminder that someone’s mother, daughter, sister, aunt, or grandmother is battling breast cancer, and consider contributing to this very worthy cause.
