Testing Concrete on the Job

The slump test is the most widely used test on the job site. A slump test is taken on-site to ensure the concrete is the right consistency for the job. Knowing the consistency and workability needed is important when ordering your concrete. Let the dispatcher know the type of job you are doing so the concrete arrives with the proper slump. If you are unsure, the dispatcher can ask you a few questions to determine the slump you need.

Slump Ranges:

0-2”

-          Requires less reinforcement. Will typically need to use vibration to place.

2-5”

-          Most jobs fall in this range with a 4” slump being the most widely used.

5-7”

-          Needs to be heavily reinforced. This will be a very flowable mix.

Slump Loss

Slump loss can occur if too much water is added at the jobsite. The higher the slump, the more flowable the mix. It’s much easier to place with a higher slump and it may be tempting to add water to make it easier, but don’t. Very few people can eyeball the perfect amount when adding water at the job site. Too much water will cause you to lose slump and will lower the strength of your concrete as well. Not all jobs are suitable for a super flowable mix in the 5-7” range. Typically basements, driveways, sidewalks, patios, and floors require a slump of 4”.
